Business cards have become so commonplace that we don't think about them
much. And therein lies "opportunity lost."
If you're interested in having your business cards go to work for you, I
challenge you to think of them as your 30-second marketing brochure. Don't just
slap your name, address, and telephone number on a standard size card and think
your job is complete.
Look at your present card right now. Go ahead pull it out. If you can zip
through it, glance at the name, title, company, and anything else that's on the
card in less than 5 seconds, THROW IT AWAY. You're wasting a perfect opportunity
-- maybe the ONLY opportunity -- to promote Y O U.
The card has two sides ... use them both. Put your message on it. Show your
product(s). Put a picture of your website. Ask them a question. Raise a problem
that only you have the solution to. Heck, put your picture on it so they don't
forget you. What better way to make your business card distinctive and unique?
After all, there's only one you.
Think about this... who is going to stand out at the end of the day when those
people you spoke to briefly are reviewing the business cards they collected? I
can tell you from personal experience, they remember the people whose
business
cards make them unforgettable.
But perhaps you work for a company, you say, and they already provide you with
business cards you can't change. Give your prospect a second, personal card.
This singles you out as someone who goes the extra mile and makes a lasting
impression. The card doesn't have to compete with the company version, nor
should it be incongruent with the message they are trying to send. Your "back-up
card" gives you a chance to be remembered, a chance to put your face on it,
raise the question, pose the problem, and suggest a solution.
You might say, "No one else is doing these things!" And you're exactly right. :
)
Get comfortable with packaging yourself in an obvious, yet professional way. How
else do you think you are going to stand out? Everybody wants to be different,
but nobody's willing to change. Well, here's your chance!
With this email, I've attached a picture of my business card which illustrates a
recent innovation in this domain. It's the Web business card. What is the
Web
business card? An eye-catching - Full color - Double sided - UV coated -
business card with a snap shot of your website printed on the back side. Much
more effective than a simple "www.yoursite.com" typed in the front of it.
